POSITION 1 NATURAL MINOR SCALE: E SHAPE

Below are two diagrams of the Position 5 (G shape) Natural Minor Scale, based within the CAGED System. The first graphic maps out the scale pattern with a clear emphasis on the Root note locations. The second diagram demonstrates the relationship between the scale and its internal minor chord shape. Both charts include the complete set of scale degrees (R, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, and b7).

How To Practice

When we work on this scale, we play the chord shape first, then the scale, and then the chord shape again. This helps us internalise the relationship between the chord shape and the scale. To play through the scale properly, start from the lowest Root note, play to the highest note available, down to the lowest note, and then end back on the lowest Root note.
