POSITION 3 MAJOR PENTATONIC SCALE: C SHAPE

The two images below show the Position 3 (C shape) Major Scale, based on the CAGED System. In the first image, the scale is shown with the Root notes highlighted. The second image identifies the scale degrees whilst highlighting the underlying chord shape. All of the scale degrees – R 2 3 5 6 – are clearly marked on both images.

How To Practice

When practicing the scale, first play the chord shape, then the scale, and then the chord shape once more. This method helps us internalise the chord shape’s position within the scale. When you play through the scale, start at the lowest Root note, play to the very highest note, back to the very lowest note, and then to the lowest Root note.
