Below are two diagrams of the Position 2 (D shape) Major Pentatonic Scale, as found in the CAGED System. The first image shows the scale pattern, with an emphasis on the Root notes. The second image shows the scale whilst highlighting the specific chord shape within the scale. You will find that both images also display all of the scale degrees – R 2 3 5 6.

How To Practice
To practice this scale, play the chord shape, followed by the scale, and then the chord shape again. This helps us internalise exactly where the chord shape sits within the scale. When playing through the scale, start from the lowest Root note, play up to the highest note in the pattern, back down to the lowest note, and finally back to the lowest Root note.
