POSITION 2 NATURAL MINOR SCALE: D SHAPE

The two images below show the Position 2 (D shape) Natural Minor Scale, as found in the CAGED System. In the first image, the scale is displayed with the Root notes highlighted. The second image identifies the scale degrees whilst highlighting the underlying minor chord shape. All of the scale degrees – R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 – are clearly marked on both images.

How To Practice

To practice this scale, we first play the chord shape, followed by the scale, and then the chord shape again. This helps us internalise exactly where the chord shape sits within the scale. When playing through the scale, start from the lowest Root note, play up to the highest note in the pattern, back down to the lowest note, and finally back to the lowest Root note.
